What is the purpose of slow-blow or time-delay fuses?

Slow-blow fuses, also known as time-delay fuses, incorporate delay features to withstand intermittent current surges, such as those from large motors, air conditioners, and dryers. They blow under constant or repeated current overload conditions.

Fast-acting fuses blow instantaneously, providing protection for lighting, electronic devices, and household circuits with equipment sensitive to current surges. Slow-blow fuses are suitable for circuits with sudden starting surges, like those involving motors, dryers, and air conditioners, while fast-acting fuses are appropriate for motor circuits that experience more frequent blows.

It is permissible to replace fuses with higher voltage ratings than the original fuse, but it's crucial to never exceed the current rating and use at least the voltage rating when replacing fuses. Following the manufacturer's recommendations is essential, and seeking advice from a licensed electrician or appliance technician is recommended if in doubt. Modifying electrical circuits is strongly discouraged for safety reasons.
